The Places My Soul Has Traveled — and Longs to Return To

Tracing belonging across borders, generations, and time

The Geography of My Soul

Some places shape us. Some call us back. And some quietly live within us, even if we’ve never truly lived there.

  • Finland. The land of becoming, and the place that quietly holds my foundation.
  • Russia. First and foremost, Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), the city of memory, where roots reach farther than time.
  • The United States. And most vividly, California: a place I visited once, yet always felt I belonged.
“Geography is not just land. It’s where memory, vision, and becoming converge.”
— Anna Haltsonen

Legacy Reconnected

I grew up not knowing that my grandmother’s family had been scattered across continents.
One evening in late 2017, a passing mention during a conversation with my mother opened a door. A story hidden for over seventy years.

What I uncovered was beyond anything I could have imagined:
my grandmother had a younger sister who had been sent to the United States as a child. Her name had vanished from our family’s memory for decades.

In the months that followed, I traced names, fragments, whispers. Until one day, a connection sparked.

The sisters, once separated by oceans and time, were reunited.

It was one of the most profound stories I’ve ever lived. One that gave my grandmother peace before her passing, and gave me something just as lasting:
a quiet pull to a place that felt strangely like home.

What the United States Awakens in Me

What if part of my story still belongs to a coastline I’ve yet to walk?
What if the rhythm of my words feels familiar there, because something in me already knows the land?

There is something about the United States: a soulful, generational, almost mythic undercurrent that keeps whispering to me.

It’s not the gloss of the American dream that calls me.
It’s the rawness.
The archetypal journey.

The deep pull of a country built on transformation: personal, collective, ancestral.

I’ve never lived in California, but something about it has always stirred a strange sense of recognition, the quiet between the ocean and the redwoods, the land that seems alive.
Not a memory, but something deeper.

Maybe that’s why American women, especially those in transition, navigating career shifts and identity, resonate so clearly with the essence of NOVÉYA.
Because in many ways, this is a country that knows how to start from scratch.
That honors those who rebuild, reimagine, rewrite.

It’s not just women’s stories that echo this spirit. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s story has long stayed with me. A symbol of transformation across borders, identities, and roles.
A boy from a small Austrian town who became the embodiment of reinvention through discipline, vision, and an unshakable belief in what could be.
He didn’t belong — until he made himself belong.

That, to me, is America at its most powerful:
Not the privilege of being chosen, but the audacity to choose yourself.

And maybe that’s why I keep feeling:
part of my story still belongs to that coastline.

One day, I’ll return. Not as a tourist, but as someone who remembers her place.

Tracing the Map of Memory and choosing how to carry it forward.

The soul doesn’t choose its coordinates by chance.
It follows memory, meaning, and music.
And I’m still tracing the map it draws, one gentle, intentional step at a time.

This journey was never just about two sisters.
It’s about all of us, those who carry legacy forward, who listen deeply and name what was nearly lost

As I reconnect threads across oceans and generations,
I’m learning that legacy isn’t something we inherit.

It’s something we activate
with presence,
with love,
with choice.
